Employment in Greater Boston is expected to remain unchanged in the first quarter, as nearly three quarters of employers say they will maintain current staff levels through March 31.
The findings were based on a national, 28,000-employer survey conducted by Manpower Inc., a Milwaukee-based provider of employment services for businesses.
Among employers in Greater Boston, 73 percent of respondents said they will keep their payrolls flat in 2010’s first quarter. Another 13 percent said they plan to hire during the three-month span, while 13 percent expect to cut back on workers, according to Manpower.
Local hiring is expected to be strongest in the retail, wholesale and government sectors. The construction, professional/business services and leisure/hospitality sectors will likely see the greatest workforce reductions, according to Manpower’s survey results.
Nationally, Manpower’s survey results indicated that 12 percent of employers expect to hire workers; 12 percent are plan to cut staff; and 73 percent plan to keep employment at current levels in the upcoming quarter.
